maranasati: the elements of disappearance

Maranasati is a Pali word, which translates as "Mindfulness of Death." Each of the four works in the exhibit focuses on a different physical element, which during the transition is subsumed by consciousness. This transition is described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead as the Bardo state.

So the making of the works became an opportunity to bring death and dying into focus, and as a result I became more sensitized and appreciative of this life.

There is actual death, as represented in the triptych, Maranasati, and then there is impermanence which is experienced constantly, and is seen in the cycles of the natural world (Paranirvana) the absence of friends and colleagues (The Elements of Disappearance) and even the affects of Global Warming (Don’t Make Waves).
